Diversity Awareness in Teaching and Research at the OVGU - July 11, 2024 - EN

This course takes place in presence.
Seminar language is English.

Target group:

This workshop is aimed at current OVGU doctoral students and postdocs teaching and researching at the university.

Objective:

For several decades, diversity has been an anchor for strategic decisions of German and U.S. institutions of higher education. In this context, higher education leaders care about more than simply the avoidance of discrimination based on diverse identities (e.g., racial or ethnic background, gender, ability, age, religious affiliation, or sexual orientation). Universities have understood that diversity requires a keen focus on equitable access and success for the vast variety of students, staff, and faculty that study at and work in our institutions. Unfortunately, the translation of these approaches into everyday practice is difficult, and institutional processes, rules, or the interactions between diverse members of the institutional community remain based on a bygone time and culture.

This workshop is offered for current OVGU doctoral students and post-docs engaged in teaching and research at the university. Often, instructors and scholars see themselves as part of the larger institution, but not necessarily a part of strategic decision making around topics of diversity.

Contents:

In this workshop we will discuss how diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice feature in teaching and research.

Further, we will work on exploring our own awareness of and resistance towards diversity, and we will co-create strategies for our own practice of teaching and research in the context of a diverse institution.

The workshop will be interactive, discussive, and reflective so that participants can explore and understand their own attitudes and behaviors and co-construct additional knowledge vis-a-vis the topic of diversity.
