March for Science: Hundreds of thousands protested for free science and free research around the world

JenaIn over 600 cities around the globe hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets to demonstrate for the the value of science and research. In Germany, demonstrations were held in 22 cities, from Helgoland to Freiburg, and the organisers claim that the March for Science is just the beginning of the movement. The aim was to show the most important prerequisite for a functioning democracy is informed citizens. If scientifically proven facts are denied, relativized, or "alternative facts" are equated with equal rights in order to strike political capital, this not only jeopardizes the legitimacy of science but also democracy as a whole. Therefore, the March for Science in Germany demonstrated against populism with its half-truths and lies - and advocated for fact-based discussions as the basis for a free, democratic society.
The mischaracterization of science as a partisan issue, which has given policymakers permission to reject overwhelming evidence, is a critical and urgent matter. It is time for people who support scientific research and evidence-based policies to take a public stand and be counted.

Here you can have a glimpse on the protests held in German cities.
